On February 18, 2019, Health, Safety, and Risk Management (HSRM) replaced its existing Bloodborne Pathogens training with two new courses. This change, in addition to providing updated content, affects the training requirements for all users. The new training requirements and their associated courses are discussed below.
For Employees Who May Have Occupational Exposure to Human Blood, Human Cell Lines or Other Potentially Infectious Materials as Defined by OSHA
Only one course (UHS110 Bloodborne Pathogens Annual OSHA Requirement) is required, along with area-specific training provided by the manager or supervisor.
This group is no longer required to take two courses (UHS100 Bloodborne Pathogens: Introduction and UHS101 Bloodborne Pathogens: Advanced).
If you have taken the previous courses and are required to take Bloodborne Pathogens training annually, you will take the new course when your annual training is due.
UHS110 Bloodborne Pathogens Annual OSHA Requirement Replaces:
- UHS100 Bloodborne Pathogens: Introduction
- UHS101 Bloodborne Pathogens: Advanced
For Lab Staff Who Work With Biohazardous Agents, Other Than Bloodborne Pathogens as Defined by OSHA
Employees who work with or encounter viruses, bacteria, animal cells, or biological toxins or materials, other than human cell lines, human blood or other potentially infectious human materials as defined by OSHA, will no longer be required by BOHD to take any Bloodborne Pathogens training.
For Anyone Needing Building Access Only
Students, faculty, staff, and visitors who need Bloodborne Pathogens training for building access, but will not engage in work or class work where exposure might occur, must take UHS111 Bloodborne Pathogens Building Access Only one time before gaining building access.
UHS111 Bloodborne Pathogens Building Access Only Replaces:
- UHS100 Bloodborne Pathogens: Introduction
- UHS101 Bloodborne Pathogens: Advanced
What You Need To Do
Supervisors/Managers/Department Safety Officers
The changes mentioned above will affect the training requirements for both current and incoming students, staff, faculty, and visitors. You may need to make the following updates and changes:
- Update onboarding documents
- Update web pages
- Work with system administrators/IT to update requirement tracking if you operate tracking systems other than the Training Hub
Compliance / Requirements System Administrators
If your system pulls completion data relating to existing Bloodborne Pathogens training courses, you will have to update your Data Warehouse queries to accommodate the new course names and numbers, along with new requirements. Contact supervisors, managers, or department safety officers in charge of determining training requirements for information about necessary changes.
